AB OBJECTIVE: This study describes an experience of training of Psychiatric
Nurses from state or university inpatient services and a follow up
evaluation fifteen months after. We expected initially that all trained
nurses would implement training programs about AIDS to the health team
and begin the development of an AIDS Prevention Program in their
services. METHODOLOGY: We interviewed each participant of the training
program and organized a meeting to discuss the results and to obtain
additional information. DISCUSSION: Two aspects were almost common in
the group trained. They were able to trained only volunteers from the
nurse team and couldn't implement significative changes in their
services in order to obtaining an improvement of the AIDS prevention. In
general they reproduced in their hospitals the same pattern of training
they have had in the beginning of the program. CONCLUSIONS: It seems
that we will have to consider in future trainings some topics: 1) we
need a better strategy to achieve a multidisciplinary approach; 2) it is
fundamental to have a real cooperation of each participant institution
and also the support from the mental health division of the Health
Department; 3) we have to reformulate our training program to enhance
the autonomy of the participants in promoting their educational events;
4) we need to develop educational training material about AIDS for
psychiatric services to the health team, to the patients and their
families; 5) we have to improve our knowledge about sexuality in
psychiatric services.
